| When Chris and I got engaged in July of 1998 we knew we
wanted a real wedding but we had no idea where to have it. We didn't want to go to a
church, neither of us belonged to one and we didn't want to follow someone else's rules.
We didn't want it outside - the weather in Iowa is too unpredictable. So when
I saw the ad for St. Peter and Paul's in the Gazette Milestones it sounded perfect. It
took 3 or 4 trips back and forth from Mt. Vernon to Solon to actually find it. But
when we pulled up, I knew it was what I wanted, and seeing the inside later that week made
it even more clear.
You see, my grandmother was Catholic, and though I never joined the faith, I remember
sitting in her church and marveling at the icons and stained glass windows.
Daydreaming about being a bride in those surroundings someday. A Catholic wedding
was not possible, but St. Peter and Paul's allowed me to have the setting of my dreams.
Chris and I were to make frequent trips, over the next few months, with family and
friends to show them the building and surrounding countryside. My dad had his doubts
about the gravel roads, but all agreed it was worth the trip.
When April 24 arrived, more quickly than I could have imagined, it was a gorgeous
spring day. The guests didn't mind the 15 minute wait due to my being late, because
they were entertained by their amazing surroundings. One of my fondest memories is
of walking down the beautiful hardwood aisle, which was freshly strewn with confetti by my
6 little angels, and seeing the faces of family and friends. After the ceremony was
complete Chris and I delighted our guests by ringing the church bell. That was
literally an uplifting experience.
It was a beatiful day in a perfect setting. Chris and I truly hope to return 50
years from now to renew our vows and ring the bell once more.
Thank you so much Historical Society,
